Caitlin Newhouse, MD

A native Angeleno, Caitlin was born and raised in sunny Southern California. She moved east for undergrad to study politics and cold weather at Harvard and spent a year working in public health in New York before continuing south to study medicine at Georgetown. After 10 years of snow, she returned home for her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and one year of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship at UCLA. She is excited to be joining the Preventive Medicine family and looks forward to pursuing her interests in health equity, infection prevention and HIV.

Hannah Kwak, MD

Karinne Van Groningen, MD

Karinne grew up in Fremont, California prior to traveling to Washington, DC to pursue her interests in government and biochemistry. She received both her BS and MD from Georgetown University. She then returned to the west coast to complete her pediatric residency training at UCLA. Karinne is now excited to be a part of the preventive medicine fellowship to pursue her interests in healthcare policy, housing insecurity, and children’s advocacy. Outside of medicine, Karinne enjoys hiking, traveling, and hanging out with her rescue dog, Shorty.

Second-Year Fellows

Denise Nunez, MD, MPH

Born and raised in New York City, I carry the desire to develop urban health and wellness in all places across America.  I am impassioned to impact wellness in every member of our nation, beginning with our tiniest members.  I initiated my medical training in the city of Chicago, IL at Chicago Medical School, in which I helped pioneer our first free clinic.  Our patients were mostly immigrants, whom spoke minimal English, which I (a Latina) was privileged to support and educate my staff on communicating and providing exceptional care.  I continued to residency in Pediatrics at State University of New York, and became emboldened in policy work and being a voice for our children and families.  My training demonstrated that physicians are needed in developing policy and promoting prevention with the same intensity as healing illness.  It is my honor to be at UCLA to carry on the voice of Prevention Health for our families, both in our community and worldwide.

Jason Malenfant, MD, MPH

Jason was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario and received his Doctor of Medicine from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He has always had a passion for travel and global health, including working with underserved populations. During his residency training, he spent two months working in rural Botswana, which inspired him to pursue infectious diseases fellowship training here at UCLA, which he has just completed. He is very excited to be staying at UCLA and to be gaining further formal training in preventive medicine and public health, with hopes to pursue a career in international public health. Aside from medicine, he enjoys working out, movies, spending time outdoors and traveling.
